"For I knew how stubborn you were;
your neck muscles were iron, your forehead was bronze."
(Even in the Lord's loving and determined call to us,
in His relentless pursuit of us,
He has no delusions about our stubbornness and rebelliousness.
The iron neck muscles in the original language
refers to being stubborn and stiff-necked like an ox
that stiffens its neck as it refuses to yield
to the yoke of submission and service it is meant to perform.
And the bronze forehead refers to the determined solicitation
of a prostitute's offer to a potential customer
that pictures the shamelessness and audacity
that compel such rebellious and sinful attitudes and actions.
It's the term from which our English word brazen comes.
This is what the Lord knows about us,
and still yet He lovingly and mercifully calls us into His salvation today.
His mercies toward us, even though He clearly sees us as we are,
are new every morning and extend to us in spite of who we are
and all because of Who He is.)
May the Lord richly bless you this day!
