The Lord Be With You Today!
"Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales;
they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god,
and they bow down and worship it.
They lift it to their shoulders and carry it;
they set it up in its place, and there it stands.
From that spot it cannot move.
Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;
it cannot save them from their troubles."
(The Lord gives us a graphic description
of the care and extent to which we reach
to find some thing to which we can turn in our need for intervention and help,
as well as in our need to worship and over which we can exercise some kind of control.
The men of old were not unique in their attempt
to fashion an idol out of their own handiwork.
We still even this day try to fashion some god thing
that is comprehensible to us and that we can dominate and manage,
some thing that we can wrap our heads around.
The Lord shows us here how diligently and tirelessly
we carry the thing we create to worship around with us.
We carefully place it in the forefront of our lives,
in a central place of honor and focus.
And He points out how this thing we create
can never and will never respond to our cries of need.
The Lord’s patient plea to us again today
is to recognize the futility and worthlessness
of trying to make our own gods or of trying to be god ourselves.)
May the Lord richly bless you this day!
