The Lord Be With You Today!
I will go before you and will level the mountains;
(The Lord has promised His servant Cyrus,
a heathen king whom He has appointed to set His people free,
that He will remove all the obstacles
that appear to be impassable mountains and that might block Cyrus’ victory
over the adversary of both Cyrus and of God’s people held in captivity.
Today, as we stand firm in our chosen and adopted position in Christ,
the Lord gives us the same assurance that He will prepare the way before us
and set us free from all that holds us in captivity,
whether that captivity is such hidden sin as lack of forgiveness
or whether we are openly walking in the bondage of sinful acts.
The Lord opens up the way for us, like Cyrus,
to march into the victory that He has already ordained for us.)
I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.
(Here bronze and iron picture the enduring and stubborn strength of captivity,
or, in a broader, more figurative sense,
represent the stubborn strength of sin that holds us behind iron bars.
They also represent God’s judgment against sin
and that sin itself will yield to His judgment against it
and that its captives will be set free.
The Lord promises us here that He does not leave us
in the enduring captivity of our sin,
but that He mercifully and lovingly releases us,
and that through His righteous judgment and complete redemption
He breaks through the sin that keeps us bound.
No matter how impossibly strong our captivity may seem,
no matter how daunting the situation before us,
no matter how strong and unyielding
are the bronze gates and iron bars holding us back,
the Lord Himself will break through our sin and captivity and circumstances
and will set us free today!)
May the Lord richly bless you this day!
