“Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels."
who are trying to exercise our own god-like control over ourselves and our world
and, in doing so, actually forming and bowing down to gods of our own creation.
The KJV translates this verse this way:
"Remember this, and show yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O you transgressorsl"
The word for "show yourselves men" is not used anywhere else in the entire Bible
and means to stand up and act like men, to show yourself a man,
to act like a man and be strong in our conviction and devotion to God.
The Lord is reminding us that we are men and should remember
that we are created beings whom He has given the intelligence to recognize the deity of God
and that, as created beings, we cannot stand in the place of God,
nor can we ourselves create a thing that is God.
It is no accident that the first of the Ten Commandments
is to have no other gods before Him
because we constantly make attempts to recreate
the same kind of situation that Adam and Eve did in the Garden
when they listened to the voice of the enemy telling them they could be like God
if only they would just show Him how capable and resourceful they were
by going ahead and eating what they had been forbidden to partake of.
Adam and Eve already were like God. He had created them in HIs Image.
They could not have been more like Him than they already were.
And God Himself was their measure, their target, their focus.
But when they listened to the voice of evil, they yielded to the foolish attempt
to make themselves their own target and focus and measure.
Our challenge today is to remember that neither we nor any target we set up
can ever be God and that we our lives belong to Him today!)
May the Lord richly bless you this day!
