“Though you were ruined and made desolate and your land laid waste,
(The Lord is speaking to Jerusalem, to His beloved city of Zion,
a city bereft of God's people,
devastated by the earlier invasion of the enemy armies of Babylon
that had razed Zion's buildings and walls.
The city, formerly the earthly dwelling place of the God of Israel,
now lay in shame and ruin, unfit even for human inhabitants.
Today, we may also find ourselves in ruined and desolate places in our lives,
even though the Lord has declared that we are His earthly temple.)
now you will be too small for your people,
(Because God has heard the cries of desperation
from His people who had rebelled against God,
had been banned from their home and were in exile,
He has promised to return them to their homeland.
And, further, He has declared this holy city will not even contain
all the inhabitants the Lord will bring back into its borders.
The area of Zion in the future will not even begin to hold
the multitudes of Gentiles who will be brought into the Kingdom
as a result of God's extending His salvation beyond the Jews.
You and I are a part of that very multitude today,
bearing witness through our salvation
to what the Lord has fulfilled through us in this very declaration,
a further assurance that what God says He will do He will do.)
and those who devoured you will be far away."
(Even the enemies who had once oppressed God's people
will be removed and will lose all their power and influence
because of the sovereign reign of God in the city that bears His Name.
For us, here is yet another assurance that the enemies
that have brought devastation into our lives will ultimately be removed.
If the Lord has brought us as fellow heirs with the Jews into His Kingdom,
He will also overcome our enemies today.
No matter what parts of us have been taken captive in Babylon,
the Lord declares He will overcome that force and release us into a return to Him.)May the Lord richly bless you this day!
