“Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away?
(Had God given Judah a bill of divorce, that would have indicated
He was at fault in the relationship and that Judah,
the wife He had taken to Himself, was pure and without fault.
Obviously not the case, the Israelites could produce no legal divorce document
because it was they who had betrayed their sacred relationship with God,
they who had been unfaithful and who had strayed from Him.
Even when we talk ourselves into believing the Lord has forsaken us
or has not been attentive to us,
He is always righteous and just in His relationship with us,
and we are the ones who stray from Him in disobedience and unfaithfulness, in lack of trust,
and in seeking relationship elsewhere and outside of His covenant of marriage with us.)
Or to which of my creditors did I sell you?
(Under the Old Testament Law, if a man was in debt, it was lawful for him
to sell his children as slaves in payment,
but the Lord has not had to sell off His people to anyone for anything owed to anyone.
Rather, their enslavement has been their own doing, their own choice,
because of your transgressions your mother was sent away."
(Israel could not blame her God for her enslavement. God had not abandoned her.
Rather, she had abandoned her God.
When we turn our backs on our relationship with God,
when we try to blame Him for our troubles,
when we say God is at fault for not meeting our needs appropriately,
we delude ourselves through foolish rationalization and justification.
He is always faithful, always just, always on time, never unfaithful, never unjust, never late.
He always yearns for us to return to Him and to the safety of His embrace
and calls us back into intimate relationship with Him today.)
May the Lord richly bless you this day!
